Seneca oil change

Just a note for those wanting to change their own oil and do not know how to reset the light. Just turn on the ignition key and quickly press the gas pedal five times.

Resealing Roof

Just got a call from the dealer after dropping off our Seneca for recall work. They wanted to know if I was interested in resealing my roof since the rig is two years old. I turned it down but does anyone actually reseal thiers? Thanks

RE: They got my power cord

Tulse had a couple of bright guys that tried to hack some wire from a sub station. One died and the other is now wishing he had, besides the serious burns I heard he lost some anatomy. Any metal is up for grabs, manhole covers and grave markers are being taken too. I am quite willing to give out free lead if they really want it, LOL

RE: mosquitoes and bugs AND DOGS

Well I guess you can do all that for while in route but there is no Heart Worm, ticks or fleas in AK unless you bring them with you. Our two dogs have never had a problem with the bugs. One is 12, the other is 6. Eagles get a blamed but there are other critters to watch out for...coyotes, wolves, owls, porcupines, wolverines, badgers, lynx....you get the picture. But as long as you have them near you, hopefully leashed, should not be a problem

RE: weather in Akansas & Oklahoma

I wouldn't give it a second thought. If you are worried, get a NOAA weather radio and kep it on. The NWS does a great job of getting the warnings and advisories out.

RE: Anchorage Campground

Eagle Rive CG is very nice and is far from the landfill. It is near a prison but I would not wory about it. There ia one gentleman that lives in that area year rouind but he is a recluse and not a bother. I think the only CG missing is Eklutna. Not really well marked but a very nice spot. The road was paved a couple of years ago and they made it a bit narrow and the grade is a bit high. It does make for some interesting moments when there is on coming traffic. The CG has paved spots and the lake area is very scenic. The drive to Anchrage is about the same as Palmer with the cost of a tat CG. Also there ia a Fred Meyers in Eagle River where I have seen many over nighters. Eagle river itself is about a 15 minute drive to downtown.

RE: Cold Weather Camping in a Seneca

I have used mine during winter months in AK and the furnace was working overtime. I looked at the smae things that you are hearing and did find some mods that helped. On the slides, there are holes under the slides on the MH side or the slide rails and the electrical conduits. On my BDRM slide that is rubber installed around the holes but not in the front two slides. I filled these gaps with foam I cut. I remove them before retracting the slides. I too noticed the daylight coming in and complained to the dealer but things are always fixed to ones satisfaction when we do it. I plugged as many of the holes as possible with foam. I did also spot a gap on the back wall floor that I am brining to the dealers attention next week. I will repost this problem after I hear wht the dealer says. As for the water issue, I had great suscess with using a small cermatic heater to keep the water manifold from freezing. I placed two drop lights in the bay with the fresh water tank and it kept it water running. I dumped the tanks every morning and then took a hot shower to help keep the pipes clear. The fresh water tank did have some insuilation on it but not much and I plan to replace it. I did not have to heat tape any waterlines but did insulate and heat tape the hose connection. During the really cold months I dry camp anyway.

RE: Study shows bear repellant effective...

Great post Joe...Makes complete sense. The comparison I was told is that a bear charging travels at about 35mph. So if a car is coming from behind you and you can turn, aim and fire one clean shot, then you might be alright carrying a weapon. I agree the spray is effective but like you and I said, get out of the area and hope you don't have a bear approaching from up wind side. As for getting fire arms in the state, one can buy a shotgun or long rifle while in state and sell it back to a pawn shop taking the lose as insurance expense. Lastly, as you point out, knowledge of the bear is real valuable...but be wise where you get it. UAF use to offer a great bear seminar at the museum given by a Prof that was not slanted either way. I found most park rangers lean towards the idea od a kinder gentler brown bear and never discuss the black bear.

RE: Alaskan Mosquitos

I like to catch the little buggers, pluck the wings and grill them on a kabob stick. Little garlic kills tha after taste.

RE: Study shows bear repellant effective...

I found the most effective way to avoid bears was to stay home...which didn't meet my need for adventure into the real Alaska. I deveolped and really should patent, an advanced hybrid of armed and unarmed bear deterent. I tied a bear bell to the front sling pivot point of my shotgun. I think ADN runs a simular article every year at the begining of the tourist season. For all those that want to carry Bear Spray, please read the instructions. It doesn't work well into the wind, and while it can stop a bear or turn it as we like to say, ya still have to get out of the area. The bears have been know to come back and lick the repelent off the ground. They are really curious critters and the new smell attracts them back afterwards. I have seen armed folks running for their lives, it is called panic. Panic can be avoided by practicing your plan before it happens. The wife and I would discuss the game plan for bear and MOOSE encounters before we hiked most trails.

RE: staying longer than 60 days

JoeGood, Are you planning on working or vacationing? Volunteering would be the same as vacationing. I would not get too worried about this. I have never heard of this being enforced. The troopers are more concerned with poachers, speeders and drunks, and they have the majority of state to enforce. Anchorage PD also has bigger fish to fry. I believe it is one of those unenforced laws like not being able to bring your horse into a saloon. If you are going to be working check with your employer in writing.

RE: Spare parts necessary for trip to Alaska

Great point about the bearings, I have adjusted bearings on the road before because the hubs were warm. Would not recommend this to just everyone, I had just repacked the bearings and knew I could back them off. Older bearings, with failing roller pins of ball bearings will heat up too, sometimes they can weld themselves to the axle. In the past I have installed greasable hubs on my trailers and keep a grease gun with me just to give a squirt occasionally. Only time I left it behind was passing thru Canada and NYC (LOL).

RE: Spare parts necessary for trip to Alaska

Check for after market bumper bolt on tire holders. I have seem these mounted on front or back. A big hint on the tires is keep the pressure right. My wife's car had a flat a while ago and she drove on it. The tire appeared good but when we pulled it off the rim the sidewalls had detireiated. The same can happen with low tire pressure. A quick check of the tires by hand works IF you don't have a gage or need to be quick, feel for hot tires; the low presure creates friction that becomes heat. I have found a tire low before by identifying the odd hot tire.

RE: Seneca BBQ

Use mine all the time with only a few issues It doesn't do well in high winds and the heat is a bit uneven. Jayco placed it between the slides and there is no light; fix this by using clip on lights with rubber on the clamp tips. I do use an extension hose but have to warm against the tripping possiblities. The gas hose coupling is placed in the wrong position under the door and prevents the door for closing. I plan to reposition this in the near future. It is small, more than two and you have to cook in batches or use a second grill. I prefer kingsford over gas so if the RV park has a regular grill I use it for meat and other items go on the gas grill. I have never had a problem with the heat but the smoke once, just once got in through the bathroom window, keep it closed now when cooking.

RE: Modifying Metal buildings

COtrekker...thanks for the ribbing I well deserve, was kinda hoping to duck it. :W The floor is made of concrete and I don't want to even think about lowering it. Likely it will require roof work. Unfortuniatly I haven't moved in yet so no pictures, will post some when we do and will also post the solution.

Modifying Metal buildings

I hope this is the right place for this question... We just recently bought a new home that has a large metal building on it. I thought that it was high enough for out RV but it is not...darn. What I'd like to know is can these metal buildings be eaily modified; raise the roof or change the pitch? I am sure that will be a flood of comments about my inability to measure and questions about the construction itself. I can tell you it is a welded frame building with screw fastners for the insulated metal.
